The kickboard is the strip of board under the bottom cabinets, sitting between the cupboard base and the floor. It takes mop water, dishwasher leaks, spilled drinks and the odd kick, and in most kitchens it is made of MDF or particleboard. Once water gets into the edge, the board swells, the laminate lifts, and it starts to crumble. We cut plastic kickboards to size that simply do not absorb water, so the replacement is the last one you fit.

A quick note on the search term: if you are after a swimming kickboard for the pool, that is a different thing entirely and not something we make. This page is about cabinet plinths and door kick plates.

Measuring a replacement kickboard

  • Measure the height from the floor to the underside of the cabinet at several points. Floors are rarely level, so use the smallest figure and allow 1 to 2 mm clearance.
  • Measure each run length. Cut the board in sections at corners and at the dishwasher, so a section can come out for servicing.
  • Measure the thickness of the old board if you want to reuse its clips.
  • Note any vents, cut-outs for the dishwasher or fridge, or notches around pipes.

If your kickboard needs ventilation slots for a fridge or oven, or notches around pipes, we can cut those on our CNC router from a sketch with measurements.

Fixing methods

Most modern cabinets stand on adjustable plastic legs, and the kickboard clips onto those legs. Screw the clip brackets to the back of the new board in line with the legs, then push the board on. Plastic boards hold screws well if you pre-drill, so the existing clips usually transfer straight over. Fit a flexible seal strip along the bottom edge if water on the floor is common, which also hides an uneven floor.

Older kitchens with a fixed timber plinth frame can have the new board glued or screwed directly to the frame. For door kick plates, a few countersunk screws or a strong double-sided tape on a clean door is usually enough.

Why replace MDF with plastic

MDF and particleboard soak up water through any exposed edge, and kickboards sit right where water collects. A plastic board does not swell, does not grow mould inside, and does not need to be sealed every time it is cut. In laundries, bathrooms under vanities, and kitchens with a dishwasher, that alone makes the switch worthwhile.

Cut and finished in our own workshop

Plastic Online is the online storefront of Holland Plastics, a fabrication workshop that cuts and shapes plastic every day. CNC routing, laser cutting, vacuum forming and plastic welding sit on one floor, and our plastic fabrication team handles complete cabinet trims and plinth sets.

Our cutting tolerance is ±0.1 mm, and we will confirm critical heights with you at quote stage. Orders go out Australia-wide from the capital-city depot nearest you, and there is no minimum order, so a single section under a vanity is fine. Visit our cut-to-size page to order.

Kitchen Kickboards and Kick Plates Cut to Size FAQ

What is the best material for a kitchen kickboard?
Foam PVC is the usual choice. It is waterproof, light, easy to fit and available in 16 mm and 18 mm to match common cabinet board. Black HDPE suits commercial kitchens where boards take heavy knocks.
Will my existing kickboard clips fit a plastic board?
Usually, yes. Measure the old board thickness and order the same. Pre-drill and screw the clip brackets to the back of the new board as you would on MDF.
How much clearance should I leave?
Measure floor to cabinet at several points, use the smallest height and take off 1 to 2 mm. A flexible seal strip along the bottom edge covers small gaps on an uneven floor.
Do you make swimming kickboards?
No. Swimming kickboards are foam floats for the pool and a different product. We cut cabinet kickboards and door kick plates.
