A ceiling that does not mind steam
Plasterboard ceilings in bathrooms, laundries, commercial kitchens and food areas take steam every day. Paint peels, mould spots appear at the corners, and in the worst cases the board sags. A PVC ceiling does not absorb moisture, so there is nothing for mould to grow into, and it wipes clean with ordinary detergent. That is why PVC is used in food processing, cool rooms, butcher shops, vet clinics and amenities blocks, and it works just as well over a home shower.
Which sheet to use
- Foam PVC : light and rigid with a smooth white face. 3mm to 5mm suits drop-in tiles for a suspended grid, and 6mm to 10mm can be screwed direct to battens.
- Rigid PVC sheet : harder and more impact resistant, for wash-down areas that are hosed and scrubbed.
- Clear PVC : for a light panel or inspection window within the ceiling.
Drop-in tiles for a suspended grid
Most suspended ceilings in Australia use a 1200 x 600mm or 600 x 600mm grid. Measure the opening inside the grid, not the grid spacing, as tiles are usually a few millimetres smaller than the nominal size. We cut tiles to your exact figure, and can cut holes for downlights, exhaust fans and sprinkler heads at the same time. Replacing stained mineral fibre tiles with PVC is a simple swap with no trades needed.
Lining a ceiling direct to battens
For a fully sealed ceiling, fix full sheets to battens with stainless screws, leave a small expansion gap at each joint and cover joints with PVC jointing strips or a food-safe sealant. PVC moves a little with temperature, so pre-drill oversize holes in hot roof spaces. Pair it with PVC wall panels for a room that is washable from floor to ceiling.
