What a root barrier does
A root barrier is a vertical wall of tough plastic buried in the soil. It turns roots downwards and away from the things you want to protect: slabs, paths, pool shells, fences, retaining walls, pipes and the neighbour's yard. It is also the only reliable way to keep running bamboo where you planted it. High density polyethylene (HDPE) is the material for the job, because roots cannot digest it, it does not rot, and it stays flexible enough to follow a curved garden edge.
Panels, not rolls
We supply root barrier as black HDPE sheet in 1mm and 1.5mm, from 2000 x 1000mm sheets, cut into strips at the depth you need. A 500mm or 600mm deep strip suits most garden beds and clumping plants. Running bamboo and established trees need 700mm or deeper. Long runs are made from several panels: overlap each joint by at least 300mm and seal it with a compatible tape or sealant so roots cannot find the gap.
Installing a root barrier
- Dig a narrow trench along the line you want to protect, slightly deeper than the panel.
- Stand the panels in the trench, leaning slightly outwards at the top so roots are steered down and away.
- Leave 30 to 50mm above the finished soil level. Bamboo rhizomes will try to jump over a barrier that sits flush.
- Overlap and seal every joint, then backfill and compact the soil on both sides.
Garden bed liners and other uses
The same sheet lines the inside of timber raised garden beds, keeping wet soil off the boards so they last years longer, and it divides vegetable beds so mint and other spreading herbs stay in their own patch. If you are setting up a growing area, our greenhouse panels page covers the glazing side.
