Acrylic (PMMA) delivers outstanding optical clarity, excellent weather resistance and easy machinability. It’s the go-to material where light transmission, surface finish and aesthetic appearance matter. Acrylic is more scratch resistant than many other clear plastics but has lower impact resistance than polycarbonate; choose grade and thickness to match mechanical needs.
Grades: Cast (higher optical quality, better thermal forming and polish), Extruded (better dimensional consistency and cost for large volumes).
Common sizes & thicknesses: Standard formats (for example 2440×1220 and 3050×2030) and thicknesses from 1.5 mm up to 50 mm+.
Finishes: Gloss, satin/matte, masked for cutting, polished edges, anti-glare and mirrored finishes.
Specialties:
Prismatic light diffusers: Micro- and macro-prismatic patterns that scatter and redirect LED/linear light to reduce glare while maintaining high usable light output. Available in clear prismatic, semi-opal or opal variants and in continuous sheet form for luminaires and architectural lighting.
Opal/White diffusers: Even, soft light with high diffusion and low hotspotting — common for pendant/linear fixtures and signage.
Textured / anti-glare sheets: Reduce reflections for display glazing.
Key points: Cast acrylic ≈92% light transmission for clear sheet; prismatic and opal variants trade some transmission for controlled diffusion. Sheets are easy to cut, rout, drill and polish — cast grades form and polish better, extruded grades are economical and consistent.
Types: Solid acrylic rods (clear, coloured and opal). Available in a wide range of diameters.
Formats & options: Raw stock for turning and milling, pre-turned/centre-drilled or polished ends on request.
Uses: Light guides, display supports, turned components, standoffs and decorative posts.
Fabrication: Excellent for lathe work — you can machine, polish and glue with acrylic cement for transparent joints.
Styles: Extruded and cast tubes, clear, opal/white and coloured variants. Wall thickness and ID/OD ranges to suit structural and optical requirements.
Specialty tubes:
Lighting/LED tubes: Opal and prismatic tubular diffusers for linear fixtures and lamp covers.
Structural/handrail tubes: Thicker-walled transparent tubes used where appearance and stiffness matter.
Thin-wall decorative tubes: For signage, balustrades and visual features.
Key considerations: Wall thickness (stiffness and load), surface finish, and UV-stabilisation for outdoor use. Tubes can be centre-drilled, notched, glued or thermally formed depending on the application.
Cutting & CNC routing for sheets and tubes.
Laser cutting for fine shapes (ensure grade suitability).
Edge finishing / polishing (mechanical, flame or flame-polish for cast grades).
Thermoforming / bending (cast acrylic performs best).
Bonding & assembly — solvent welding and recommended adhesives for optical joints.
Custom tube end-caps, fittings and holes for lighting/assembly.
Lighting diffusers and luminaires, signage and POS displays, point-of-sale fixtures, balustrades, decorative columns, light pipes and guides, prototypes and turned decorative parts, aquarium panels and glazing where optical clarity is essential.
When requesting a quote, provide: material grade (cast or extruded), product type (sheet / rod / tube), size (sheet size & thickness or tube OD/ID and wall), finish (clear, opal, prismatic), any masking, required machining (cut-to-size, holes, radiused corners) and expected quantities. For prismatic diffusers specify prism type (micro vs macro) and whether you need continuous or panelized lengths.
Bottom line: Acrylic gives you the best optical clarity and finish for lighting and display work; pick cast for top optical/thermal performance and extruded where cost and dimensional repeatability matter. Prismatic and opal specialty products let you manage glare and uniformity without sacrificing aesthetics.
