A shop-bought chopping board is never quite the right size. It slides around on the bench, does not cover the space you actually work on, or will not fit the gap in a commercial prep line. We cut HDPE chopping boards to the exact size you need, from a small board for a caravan drawer to a full bench-top cutting surface or butcher block top, and we can rout grooves and handles into them.

Why HDPE for chopping boards

High density polyethylene, or HDPE, is widely used for food prep boards. It is non-porous, so juices sit on the surface rather than soaking in, and it can be scrubbed with hot soapy water. It is kind to knife edges, does not crack or split like timber, and it is heavy enough to stay put on the bench. When it eventually wears, it can be resurfaced rather than thrown away.

Our HDPE cutting board sheet is a natural white grade, in thicknesses from 1.5 mm up to 20 mm. If you need food-contact paperwork for a council inspection or a commercial fit-out, ask us for the material data sheet before you order.

Picking a thickness

  • 1.5 to 3 mm: flexible cutting mats and liners that sit on top of an existing bench or board.
  • 6 to 10 mm: everyday kitchen boards and boards for camping, caravans and boats.
  • 12 to 15 mm: heavier commercial boards that stay flat and give room for resurfacing.
  • 20 mm: butcher blocks and bench-top cutting surfaces that take cleavers and heavy work.

Thicker boards lie flatter and can be resurfaced more times. For a board that will be planed back every year or two, start thicker than you think you need.

About colour-coded boards

Many commercial kitchens colour-code boards by food type. Our cutting board grade is stocked in natural white. We do not currently list a full colour-coded range in that grade, so if you need specific colours, contact us before ordering and we will tell you honestly what we can get.

Grooves, handles and shapes

Because we cut on our own CNC router , a board does not have to be a plain rectangle. Common extras include:

  • A juice groove routed around the edge to catch liquid from meat and fruit.
  • Hand holes or a finger slot along one end, so a heavy board is easy to lift and hang.
  • Rounded corners and eased edges, so the board is comfortable to handle and does not chip.
  • Cut-outs to fit around a tap, a sink or a bench fitting.
  • Rebates or stops on the underside so the board locates on a bench or in a frame.

Send a sketch with dimensions and we will route it to suit. For more involved parts, see our plastic machined parts service.

Bait boards and boat boards

On a boat, the board has to survive sun, salt water and fish. Seaboard marine HDPE is made for that life. It is UV stabilised for outdoor use, comes in white and black, plus a black anti-slip textured finish, in thicknesses from 6 mm to 25 mm. We cut it into bait boards, filleting tables, rod holder plates and hatch lids, with routed grooves, drain holes and fixing holes where you need them.

Resurfacing a worn board

Over time knife cuts roughen the surface of any board. Deep scoring is harder to clean, so commercial kitchens often have boards resurfaced. A thick HDPE board can be planed or machined back to a fresh flat face several times. Talk to us about resurfacing large or custom boards, or simply order a replacement cut to the same size.

Cut and finished in our own workshop

Plastic Online is the online ordering desk for Holland Plastics, a working plastics fabricator. Our workshop handles CNC routing, laser cutting, vacuum forming and plastic welding on one floor, so routing a juice groove or a set of hand holes is everyday work.

We cut to ±0.1 mm, and at quote stage we will confirm any size that must fit exactly, such as a board that drops into a bench recess. Boards ship Australia-wide from the capital-city depot nearest you, and there is no minimum order, so one board for the caravan is fine. Start at our cut-to-size page.

HDPE Chopping Boards Cut to Size FAQ

Is HDPE good for chopping boards?
Yes. HDPE is widely used for food prep boards because it is non-porous, easy to scrub clean, gentle on knives and does not crack like timber. Ask us for the material data sheet if you need food-contact paperwork.
What thicknesses can you cut cutting boards from?
Our natural white cutting board grade HDPE is stocked from 1.5 mm up to 20 mm. Most kitchen boards are 6 to 12 mm, and butcher blocks are usually 20 mm.
Do you have colour-coded chopping boards?
Our cutting board grade is stocked in natural white. If you need specific colours for a colour-coded system, contact us before ordering and we will confirm what is available.
Can you add a juice groove or handles?
Yes. We rout juice grooves, hand holes, rounded corners and cut-outs on our CNC router. Send a sketch with measurements.
What should I use for a boat bait board?
Seaboard marine HDPE. It is UV stabilised for outdoor use and comes in white, black and black anti-slip, from 6 mm to 25 mm thick.
