Glass is the wrong choice for a shed or cubby

Garden sheds get bumped by mowers and wheelbarrows. Cubby houses get climbed on, kicked and hit with balls. A glass pane in either is a broken window waiting to happen, with sharp edges at a child's eye level. Clear polycarbonate sheet looks like glass from a few steps away but is around 250 times stronger, weighs half as much, and simply flexes when something hits it. It also cuts and drills with ordinary tools, so a replacement window is an afternoon job.

Typical uses

  • Replacement windows for steel and timber garden sheds.
  • Cubby house and playhouse windows, including round and arched shapes.
  • Chicken coop, aviary and dog kennel windows.
  • Workshop and garage door lights, and skylight panels in a shed roof.

Thickness and finish

3mm is plenty for small cubby windows held in a timber rebate. 4.5mm to 6mm suits shed windows up to about 900mm and anything that might be leaned on. Clear gives the best view and light, while opal or tinted sheet gives privacy and stops tools being seen from outside. Choose a UV-protected grade for any window in the sun.

Fitting a polycarbonate window

Measure the opening and take off 2 to 3mm each way so the sheet can expand on hot days. Fix it with timber beading or an aluminium angle, or screw straight through with pre-drilled oversize holes and sealing washers. Run a bead of neutral cure silicone around the edge to keep rain out. Peel the protective film off only once the window is in.

Shed and Cubby House Windows in Polycarbonate FAQ

What is the best plastic for a cubby house window?
Polycarbonate. It is virtually unbreakable, so it will not shatter if a child or a ball hits it.
What thickness polycarbonate for a shed window?
4.5mm to 6mm suits most shed windows. 3mm is fine for small cubby windows held in a frame.
Can you cut round cubby house windows?
Yes. Round, arched and porthole shapes are cut on our CNC router.
How much smaller than the opening should the sheet be?
Allow 2 to 3mm each way so the sheet can expand in the heat.
