Joining plastics that glue will not hold

Acrylic and polycarbonate can be solvent bonded. The polyolefins — HDPE and polypropylene — cannot: nothing sticks to them reliably, which is exactly why they are used for chemical service in the first place. Those materials are joined by welding, fusing the parent material so the joint is the same plastic as the parts either side of it.

That is what makes welded fabrication the right answer for anything holding liquid or handling fumes. A bonded seam is a different material with different chemical resistance; a welded seam is not.

Plastic Welding FAQ

Why weld instead of glue?
Because glue does not hold on the materials that matter here. HDPE and polypropylene are chemically inert, which is why they are chosen for tanks and ducting and also why adhesives fail on them. Welding fuses the parent material, so the seam has the same chemical resistance as the panels either side. Acrylic and polycarbonate are different — those we solvent bond.
Can you repair an existing tank or duct?
Often, yes. Send photos of the damage and tell us the material, what it holds and roughly how old it is. Some repairs are straightforward; some are not worth doing against a replacement, and we will tell you which we think it is rather than quote either way.
What material should my tank be?
It depends on what is going in it — the chemical, the concentration and the service temperature. HDPE, polypropylene, PVC and PVDF all have different chemical and temperature envelopes. Tell us the duty and we will recommend the material as part of the quote rather than asking you to pick one first.
