A clear cover over a window or door

A window awning or door canopy stops rain blowing in, keeps the sun off the glass and gives you somewhere dry to stand while you find your keys. Made from solid polycarbonate sheet , it does all that without darkening the room behind it. Polycarbonate is close to unbreakable, so hail, falling branches and a stray cricket ball will not shatter it, and UV-protected grades stay clear outdoors for years.

Choosing thickness and tint

  • Small window hoods up to about 900mm wide: 4.5mm or 5mm.
  • Door canopies and entry awnings up to about 1500mm: 6mm, on a bracket or frame.
  • Wider spans or areas that take wind load: 8mm to 10mm, with a supporting frame.

Clear lets the most light through. Grey and bronze tints cut glare and heat on west-facing windows while still letting you see the sky. Always fit the UV-protected side facing up, as it is marked on the protective film.

Fixing an awning so it lasts

Give the awning a fall of at least 5 degrees away from the wall so water runs off the front edge. Polycarbonate expands in the heat, so drill fixing holes about 3mm oversize, use screws with a sealing washer and do not over-tighten. Seal the top edge against the wall with a flashing or a neutral cure silicone. Most kits use powder coated aluminium or stainless brackets, and we can cut the sheet to suit the bracket spacing you have.

Polycarbonate Awnings for Windows and Doors FAQ

What thickness polycarbonate do I need for an awning?
4.5mm to 5mm suits small window hoods. Door canopies up to about 1500mm wide usually use 6mm on brackets, and wider spans use 8mm to 10mm with a frame.
Will a polycarbonate awning go yellow?
UV-protected polycarbonate is made for outdoor use and stays clear for many years. Fit the protected side facing up.
Is polycarbonate better than acrylic for an awning?
Yes, for most awnings. Polycarbonate is far more impact resistant, so it handles hail and falling branches without cracking.
Can you bend the sheet into a curved awning?
Yes. Our fabrication team can line bend polycarbonate to an angle or form a gentle curve.
